The drawn sword meas. approx. 35.50 inches long from point to pommel. The immaculately clean and bright blade meas. approx. 30.00 inches long and has an unstopped fuller approx. 19.25 inches long. The obverse ricasso is marked “GERMANY” while the blade is beautifully etched with a spread-winged eagle at center flanked by a panoply of arms on one side and of flags on the other, all connected by scrollwork. The reverse ricasso is etched “THE LILLEY-AMES CO. COLUMBUS, OHIO” and is etched with a script “U.S.” at center flanked by a panoply of arms on one side and a fascine on the other. All etching is in first class condition with a frosted background. The blade edge is free of nicks.
The hilt has a ribbed grip made of black thermoplastic with a wonderfully clean iron knuckle bow which divides into three individual branches ending in a teardrop shaped quillon. The bottom of the grip has a ribbed iron ferrule with a matching backstrap that runs up to a tired dome pommel. Attached is the correct leather sword knot however, the leather surface shows moderate to heavy wear.
Scabbard is in excellent condition as well with both rings and mounts and is undented. The surface of the scabbard as well as the hilt appears to be nickeled or silver plated.
The M. C. Lilley Company absorbed the Henderson-Ames Company in 1923 placing the manufacture of this sword sometime after that date. [ad] [ph:m]
