Bright ambrotype of a seated young soldier holding a book in his lap. He wears a dark jacket with six visible brass buttons with room for a few more in the dark area of his waist. Jacket also has buttoned cloth epaulettes, a medium height collar and an exterior breast pocket. On his head he wears a top hat turned up on one side with the brim also slightly curled on the other. The fellow has a decided militia or Confederate look. What he wears is certainly not US regulation.
Image is clear with excellent contrast, however there is discoloration around the edges as well as some oxidation.
The photo comes in a split full case the standard scrollwork mat and frame. Both have darkened with age. Upper part of the case still retains the felt pillow cushion. Exterior of the case matches in decoration and patina. [ad]
