This Artillery Short Sword is one of several variations of Confederate manufactured short swords. The hilt is cast like the US Model 1832 sans the American Eagle. Heavy cast brass hilt; the hilt is un-rivetted with crude scaled grip surface. The large cross guard has the initials “O.P.M.O.” inside the channel, reverse side the initials “O.P.M.L.” also scratched into the channel. Hilt measures 5 7/8 inches. Cross guard measures 4 inch by 7/8 inches. Double edge blade unmarked. No fullers. Blade measures 18 ¼ inches long, 1 ¾ inches of the ricasso, overall measures 24 1/8 inches. Blade nice, untouched patina, hilt cleaned years ago. Like so many short artillery swords, the maker is unknown. One of the heaviest short artillery swords we’ve seen. [ws]
