The model 1840 Ames Medical Staff Sword was a unique design. Sword has a straight, diamond shaped double edge blade. Obverse side of blade etched canopy floral design with “U.S. Medical Staff” Reverse side engraved “Ames Mg. Co./Chicopee/Mass” on the ricasso. Canopy of Arms, floral winged spread eagle etched with “E Pluribus Unum” in riband. Blade semi-gray patina, no rust/pitting. Very minor nicks along edge of blade. Buff leather washer intact. Letters “M.S.” for medical staff made of silver applied to the cast brass cross-guard. Hilt has an American eagle cast into the handle. Pommel cap shape of a pineapple. Reverse side of hilt plain shield with plain panel on handle. Used for preservation engraving. The scabbard untouched brass retains most of the gilt finish. Brass sword mounts moulded with raised foliage patterns. Upper mount with two carrying rings. Lower mount single carrying ring. Scabbard has no dings, some minor solder near drag.
