This Confederate M1840 Mounted Artillery Saber is in very good condition. The ricasso is stamped “T.G. & Co. / N.O.” which stands for the firm of Thomas Griswold & Company of New Orleans. In August 1861, the partnership of Hyde & Goodrich was dissolved by the withdrawal of A. L. Hyde and the firm continued as Thomas, Griswold & Co. on the corner of Canal and Royal Streets. Thomas, Griswold & Co manufactured and sold many types of war supplies but are mainly known for their swords, sabers and cutlasses.
The 31 ½” blade is clean with a semi-bright surface covered with patchy darker mottling. Edge has no nicks. The grip retains original leather wrap and twisted wire; both show little wear. Single brass hand guard has a quillion at top end and terminates at the cast brass pommel. There is a very small space between the pommel and the peened end of the blade tang suggesting the end was struck against something at one time. Brass components show only light wear and have an attractive dark patina.
The entire scabbard is made of brass and remains in exceptionally good shape. There are no noticeable dents. Two bands hold 1 ½” rings. Throat and drag are perfect. A soldered seam runs along the bottom of the scabbard.
A very fine Confederate saber with scabbard from a scarce maker. [jet]
