The overall length of the drawn saber is 40.75 inches long from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 35.00 inches long with an unstopped central fuller 26.50 inches in length. The surface of the blade is dark with light scattered surface pitting. True edge has a single visible nick that is slight. Ricassos are unmarked.
Hilt has a ribbed wood grip and a Kenansville type large smooth brass pommel cap. Cast brass knucklebow is three branched with a counterguard that ends in a pointed quillon. Casting is good with one or two small flaws. Edge of the guard is marked with the Roman numeral “XVIII.” The grip retains only a very small piece of the leather wrap but the single strand of heavy brass straight wire is complete. The ridges of the wood grip are smooth and shiny from years of handling. The wood also exhibits several cracks from age but none are critical. Guard has the slightest wiggle to it.
Heavy iron scabbard has average wear from age, use and storage. Surface is dark and there are no major dents. Both ring mounts are of plain brass and both rings are present. Throat is also of brass and marked on its face with “XXIIl” with the third Roman numeral “I” being partially worn away. Scratched into the brass next to the Roman numeral is what could be a “17” or an “H” or an “A.”
This impressive Confederate manufactured saber displays very well. [ad]
