Double edged blade meas. approx. 21.00 inches and has a surface that is dark and uncleaned. The surface has scattered moderate pitting and patches of light surface rust.
Obverse ricasso is strongly marked “N. P. AMES” over a somewhat weak “SPRINGFIELD.” Reverse ricasso has a very strong “U.S.N.” over “1843” over weaker inspector’s initials of “NWP.” Blade edges have several small nicks.
Standard brass knucklebow that is narrow near the pommel and widens toward the blade ending in a quillon. Quillon is stamped on both sides with faint initials. Grip is cast brass with a spread-winged eagle worked into each side of the pommel with a scaled grip.
There is no scabbard.
Sword is completely “in the black.” Nice untouched example. [ad]
