Mounted officer staff and field as it has the curved cavalry blade on a field officer hilt. Brass hilt has strong traces of gilt. Sharskin wrap and wire are in great condition. Blade is flat backed like an 1840 cavalry saber and is not etched with a US or eagle which is standard for Horstmann cavalry blade etch in this style. Blade is not mint but etch is deep and has good frost remaining. Obverse blade etch is W. H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia / fan foliate / stand of arms / foliate / stand of arms / foliate. Reverse blade is fan foliate / geometric shape / foliate / stand of arms / foliate. Steel scabbard is excellent with most of its original brown remaining. Mounts and drag still retain generous amounts of original gilt.
