The blade on this sword is bright and exhibits only the lightest mottling. Blade edge is good but does have one visible nick in the edge. The obverse ricasso is stamped with “US” over “J.C.W.” and “1865.” The reverse ricasso carries the makers mark in a scroll that reads “MADE BY / AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE.” The original leather washer is present under the counterguard and is complete.
The hilt has a leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap. The leather shows some wear but the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard have a nice light patina and nothing is loose. Top of pommel is stamped with inspector’s initials “J.F.”
Metal scabbard is complete with throat and both mounts and rings. The surface of the scabbard has a nice dark patina with some discolorations from oxidation. There is one very small dent just above the top mount and a tiny hole in the side of the drag. [AD]
