This saber was one of 37,500 edged weapons produced for the US Ordnance Dept. by Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island during the American Civil War. The slightly curved blade measures 35 inches long, has a width of 1 1/16 and 27 inch long wide fuller and a narrow fuller 18 1/2 inches long. Blade has a gray patina with black age spots. No rust or pitting. Obverse ricasso is sharply marked with “U.S. / J.M. / 1864” while the reverse ricasso bears “Mansfield / & Lamb / Forestdale R.I.”. in a large oval cartouche. Buff leather washer intact.
Original block leather wrap and brass wire intact with very minor wear to leather grip. Brass belt exhibits a nice patina in excellent condition.
