This non-regulation Staff and Field officer’s sword is one of many produced by various manufacturers during the Civil War.
The blade of the Staff & Field Officer sword is so slightly curved that it looks straight at first glance. It is single-edged with a false edge extending back about 12 inches from the point. There is a wide deep fuller which runs from the ricasso to the beginning of the false edge. The obverse side of the blade is decorated with etched designs which include floral sprays, an American eagle, and a large ribbon with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM." The reverse side bears the letters "U.S." The etching is faint. The blade is marked “SOLINGEN” and has the ….symbol on the ricasso. On the other side is a small gold disc with “PROVED” stamped inside. The spine of the blade is unmarked. The blade is gray and has spotty surface rust which does not make etchings easy to see. The grips have a wooden handle with a sharkskin cover in excellent, tight condition. Cover is wrapped with double-twist wire flanked with additional single strands of wire. Wire is loose in places. The guard is of the half-basket design with two branches on the obverse side of the knucklebow and a single branch on the reverse side. The spaces between these branches is filled with pierced floral designs and the letters "US." Atop the US is an eagle with ribbon in beak that reads “E. PLURIBUS UNUM.” All metal parts of the hilt are brass.
Steel scabbard wears a mixed light/dark finish and has a few dents down at the drag. The throat, steel bands, and drag are all steel. All scabbard attachments are tight. [jet]
