A rather unusual sword that was custom cast by Horstmann utilizing a modified Navy guard from the M1852 Naval Officer’s Sword. The underside of the guard has oak leaves and acorns with a riband with “US” instead of ‘USN” as normally seen. The quillon was changed from the dolphin Navy style to a flat but decorated Army style. The pommel is the Army style as is the top of the kuncklebow. A small leather covered grip with twisted brass wire, all very fine.
The blade measures only 27 ¼” long and .89” wide. The blade has scaled down normal naval etchings of a fouled anchor with shield, oval of stars, panoply of pole arms, an eagle perched atop a deck gun, riband with “USN” removed and some oak & acorn designs. Blade ricasso has a stamped knights head.
The back stitched black leather scabbard has plain mount. All brass with a very nice untouched patina. Leather scabbard is dry.
Nice example of a sword adapted by a large military goods dealer of the time. [ss]
