Brass eagle head pommel sword with separately cast “D” shaped guard which protrudes from the eagle’s beak. Underside of guard is marked with “W.H. HORSTMANN / & SONS / MAKERS” in raised letters in three small recessed panels. Blade measures 23 ½” and is also marked inside a scroll “W.H. Horstmann / & Sons / Philadelphia”. A few simple scroll designs, panoply of arms, etc. decorate the slightly curved blade. The blade has a gun metal gray patina with some scattered areas of light pitting.
These pre-1859 enlistedman’s swords were made in three slightly varying details for non-commissioned officers, musicians, and boy musicians. No scabbard. [ss]
