This is a French import Naval sword with leather scabbard. This has a 27 ½” plated blade with spear point tip and large and small fuller. Engraved on the spine “Coulaux a Ulingenthal” and with two hallmarks on the ricasso. An intricate brass guard, back strap and pommel. A fouled anchor is amid vine and leaf patterns in the gurard. A dolphin’s head quillion stands out from the top of the guard. Ebony horn grip is complete with twists of brass wire.
The black leather scabbard is complete with heavy cast mounts. The throat features a fouled anchor on both sides and a sea shell “button” for a frog. The throat and middle mount have brass rings. The drag also features sea shells and exhibits no wear.
The whole set is in very good condition, the blade with all of its original plated finish and all brass components showing nice dark patina. The leather is very good and the stitching is tight. A very attractive sword based on the French 1837 pattern for a naval officer. [jet]
