This classic original Civil War cavalry officer’s sabre was produced by Collins and Company located in Collinsville, CT in 1861. Often referred to as the Model 1840/60 transition model. The hilt is a Model 1860 believed to be a Tiffany hilt which is often found on blades made by Collins and Company for Tiffany. The blade is marked “Collins & Co/Hartford/Conn.” Address is often dated 1861/1862. The obverse is dated “1861”. Etched on this side is an intricate “US” inside a panel; the reverse side has an exceptionally fine etched wing spread American Eagle. Below this is an oval panel with “Tiffany & Co. N.Y.”.
Collins & Co. supplied Tiffany a retainer during the Civil War with many blades dared 1861/1862. The Tiffany hilt has a cast American winged spread eagle on the quillon. Standard floral design on the pommel cap, with etched floral design on the branches. Scabbard mount rings and throat engraved with floral design. Shark skin grip and wiring wrap original to the sword. A wonderful example of this classic edged weapon produced in America in 1861. [ws]
