Marine musician swords are very rare. Upon careful examination you can tell that this was an NCO sword produced without a counter guard and with the outer shell guard removed. The Marines (1859 regulations) had one side of the shell removed on their Civil War era musician swords The outer guard being later removed to conform to the regular musician's swords of the 1870's period. The blade has the etched Horstmann / Phila. address and a scroll design panel with U.S.M.C. in the center. It appears to have been brass plated at that time to make it have a new look upon reissue.
