Knuckle bow is stamped “PHILADELPHIA”. Any cutlass identified to a particular ship is exceedingly rare! The cutlass is numbered “17M / 960” on the top of the guard. The pommel is inspected “D. R.” as is the blade, which is marked “U.S.N. / D.R. / 1862”. The brass basket handguard is in very fine condition and has a nice rich patina. The reverse side of the blade is marked “Made by Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee” inside a scroll. An early replacement leather washer is fitted at the ricasso. The leather grip is painted black. The leather scabbard with brass rivets also appears to have an old black layer of paint – possibly done while in service. A fine addition to any Naval collection. [SS]
