Very nice example with blade ricasso marked “1861”, reverse side “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICOPEE / MASS.” Leather wrapped grip has a very old coat of heavy black paint possibly done during service life. Brass basket guard in very fine condition with excellent patina. An old leather washer is present at the ricasso; the washer is probably an early replacement, possibly again sometime during its service. The top of the guard is marked “3M/447”. Blade is smooth with gray metal appearance.
The scabbard is black leather with brass/copper rivets. Scabbard is marked “19M/702” above frog button. The very tip of the scabbard is worn away with top of cutlass just through a small amount. Overall nice cutlass from American Civil War.
