Blade made by Collins in 1862 and mounted by Ball, Black & Co. N.Y.C. A very high grade sword with deeply chiseled mounting decoration. The grip is silver with double strands of twisted wire. The guard is very high relief with gilt finish and frosted gilt on the Acorn & Oak leaf on both the top and bottom of the guard. The frosted gold highlights the branch from the top and the USN ribbon on the bottom. The Dolphin heads on the quillon and top of the knuckle bow are very finely detailed. The pommel and pommel cap are both very high relief casting with fine chasing and frosted gold. The blade has 20 inches of fine etching. The obverse ricasso is stamped 1862 and the reverse, Collins & Co. / Hartford / Conn. There is a number 7 stamped on the spine of the blade near the guard. The blade has a full standing sailor with rope, A Federal Shield over Oars and a pennant with U.S. along with some great geometric and floral designs. The reverse etching begins with Ball, Black / & Co. / New York, a bold eagle perched on a naval cannon, A fouled Anchor and block letter U.S.N. Acorn, oak leaf and fancy design work finish it off. The leather scabbard is of the wrapped, seamless design and had very high quality knotted rope mounts and a dolphin drag.
