This specimen is a British Pattern 1821 enlisted cavalry Type 1 contract saber manufactured by either Schnitzler and Kirschbaum of Solingen, Prussia or Robert Mole of Birmingham, England.  The Tiffany Company of New York City imported and sold these sabers by during the Civil War.  The cavalry saber has a two branch steel hilt with a slightly curved steel blade that measures 35½” long, a width of 1¼” and a 21” long unstopped fuller.  Obverse ricasso is marked with the star over TC (Tiffany). Reverse ricasso unmarked. The mottled, dark gray blade has moderate wear with evidence of edge sharpening.

Grips are in fair to good condition and employ a grooved wooden handle covered with black bridle leather wrapped with copper single twisted wire wrap flanked with a strand of brass / copper wire.  Leather dry and has some chipping, cracking with a large chip missing from the area adjacent to the pommel. A steel top strap with ears runs from the ferrule to the pommel. Steel scabbard wears a dark plum patina.  Bands, mounts and rings tight to the body. Scabbard drag shows no wear but the slipper edges are stamped with “S&K” and “W.A.M.”. This British Pattern 1822 cavalry officer’s saber is in strong, tight condition.
