Presented here is a wonderful military edged weapon used in America circa 1820 to 1840. The saber and its brass scabbard are a high quality specimen produced by the maker A. W. (Adam W.) Spies who was active from 1820 until 1851.
The curved steel blade measures 29” long and bears a single edge with a hatchet point tip. Blade exhibits a broad shallow fuller that begins at the ricasso and terminates 7” from the point. Entire blade has a mottled salt & pepper gray coloring. Both flats exhibits a decorative etching of scroll work of foliate and military motifs that travels upwards from ricasso for 11½.” Maker’s partial name is found on the obverse ricasso under the guard langet. Opposite flat of the saber blade likewise features ornate etching of foliate and military motifs. Blade is in very good condition with scattered spots of dark oxidation overall. Blade edge shows evidence of small dings.
Grips are bone carved with diagonal groove designs and a sun ray burst. Bone nicely intact with no breaks. One light surface crack on reverse side. A gilt brass ferrule at the base of the grips secures the brass top strap band. Gilt pommel has the design of the American eagle head. The ornately cast knucklebow is in the reverse “P” pattern. On each side of the guard are shield-shaped langets cast with a spread-winged eagle on both. Quillon terminates in a small crown ornament. Gold gilted hilt appears to have never been cleaned.
Ornate brass scabbard, tight and strong, has a bright sheen with scattered areas of light rust oxidation. Obverse side of scabbard body is profusely engraved with floral designs and a center military spread-winged eagle motif. No drag but that end of the scabbard is also engraved with a floral motif. Tow mounts and rings are tight to the body. Scabbard also has two, heavy, copper-woven sword straps, long and short, with brass drops to secure to the scabbard rings. This specimen is a great collectible and a fine artifact specimen of early Americana edged weaponry.
