US MODEL 1841 NAVY CUTLASS

$2,950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 172-3291

A very scarce U.S. Navy Cutlass with original first type scabbard. This example is dated 1842 (first year of manufacture) and marked N.P. AMES CABOTVILLE MASS on the blade near the hilt. The reverse is marked USN 1842. There are also a series of numbers and letters stamped into the face of the guard, 2 D N12 which would indicate the rack placement and number of the piece. With this early date, it most certainly was around for service during the Mexican War period and up through the Civil War.

The full length measurement of the cutlass itself is 26 ¾” and within the scabbard 27 ¼”. Overall condition: blade exhibits a grayish-matt finish with a series of dark surface oxidation spots near the upper section of the blade. There are several small edge nicks located the length of the blade. The brass guard and grip show remnant signs of once being painted a red color. As for the scabbard, the brass throat and scabbard tip fittings are present and securely fastened to the original leather body with brass rivets. Leather scabbard body is supple, but shows three areas of surface creasing. Stitching along the rear seam is complete and tight.

A complete early example.
