This example of an original, M1840 heavy cavalry saber and scabbard was imported by the Philadelphia firm of William Horstmann. Blade shows the maker’s address on the obverse ricasso of “HORSTMANN’S” over “PHILA.” Reverse ricasso is plain. Specimen exhibits a smooth, dark gray appearance with rust pitting and dark oxidation overall. Blade edge is free of nicks but does show evidence of sharpening. Missing the original leather washer.
Pommel cap of the Phrygian helmet design bears no inspector’s marks. Walnut grips are wrapped with black bridle leather that is dry and cracked. Grips exhibits shrinkage with light chipping and scuffing. Double twist brass wire remains tight. The uncleaned brass sword hilt, with its knucklebow, quillon and two-branch guard, is loose on the tang. Both branches show evidence of impact and are bent. Hilt bears a pleasing, uncleaned dark bronze patina. Metal scabbard has been painted with a gold wash and is undented. Ring mounts are tight and secure two 1 ½” diameter rings. Throat has the pinned inner collar and the drag shows little wear.
