Item Code: 721-22

This saber is a classic mounted artillery officer’s edged weapon from the 1815 to 1830 era. Sidearm follows a design that incorporates a plain, curved, single-edged blade with a wide, stopped fuller that is 20½” long. Saber measures 33” long from point to pommel while the blade is 28½” long. Knucklebow is of the reverse-P type and undecorated. Brass quillons are plain and terminate above the blade in a disc finial. On either side of the quillon are two, brass, shield-shaped langets without any decoration. Blade has a flat back and wears a dull semi-bright coloring with scattered spots of light pitting and areas of dark oxidation. No visible edge nicks.

Wood ribbed grips have a slight center swell and wear the original black leather in good condition overall with no flaking and light scuffing. Has a plain brass ferrule at the base of the grips and a plain brass backstrap which extends to the plain bird’s head pommel which is pierced near the pommel for a sword knot. Black leather scabbard is good with a few stressed areas. No brass throat but has a single brass mount with a small brass suspension ring secured and a brass drag. Scabbard is wrapped in a crude clear plastic covering. This imported, brass-hilted artillery officer’s saber is a representative specimen of early Americana edged weaponry.
