This saber was one of 37,500 edged weapons produced for the U.S. Ordnance Department by Henry Mansfield and Estus Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island during the war. This particular saber rig came out of a West Virginia family collection.
The slightly curved saber blade measures 35” long, has a width of 1 1/16” and a 27” long, wide fuller with a narrow fuller 18½” long. Blade features a light gray finish overall and exhibits a few edge nicks. Obverse riccasso is strongly marked “U.S. / J. M. / 1864” while the reverse ricasso bears “MANSFIELD / & LAMB / FORESTDALE R.I.” Markings all contained within a large oval. Brass hilt, tight and strong, retains its original buff leather washer and a high domed pommel cap with inspector’s marks “J. M.”
Hilt retains a pleasing, uncleaned golden bronze patina. Sword grips exhibit the typical shallow grooved, leather covered wood handle with double-twist brass wire wrapped around. Original black leather covering is in good condition with just light cracking, scuffing, and flaking. Brass wire twists are strong with three slightly loose. Retains original leather pad below the quillon which itself has been noticeably bent forward toward the back of blade.
Uncleaned steel scabbard exhibits two small dents some 8” from the drag and appears never to have been cleaned. No inspector marks visible on drag. Two ring mounts are tight and hold two 1¼” diameter sword rings. Bottom of the upper ring mount shows wear and indicates the saber was belted and used. A nice Mansfield & Lamb M1860 Civil War cavalry specimen with scabbard at a great price.
