Maker mark: “C. Roby / “W. Chelmsford / Mass.” Inspector mark: “U.S. / 1864/ A.G.M.” Bright, clean blade measuring 34.5” in length, 1.125” in width at base. No dings. Exhibits very slight traces of water marking. Washer present. Hilt assembly tight and symmetrical. Brass work exhibits medium coppery patina with minor dings. Original leather grip exhibits light wear and cracking. Tight brass wiring. Scabbard exhibits medium gray patina. Completely ding-free. Drag bears inspectors stamp “AGM”. Solid throat and carrying mounts. Overall, an attractive piece and a fine collectible. [The 1864 Roby enlisted saber was one of George Custer’s favorites.]
