IMPORTED MODEL 1840 CAVALRY SABER AND SCABBARD WITH ‘TIFFANY’ MARKINGS

$995.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: E2391

Original, early war, Model 1840 cavalry enlisted saber complete with original metal scabbard. The ricasso bears the stampings of PDL and of Tiffany & Company.  Enlisted sabers manufactured by maker P.D.L. (P. D. Luneschoss) of Prussia (Germany) were imported by retailers / assemblers such as New York’s Tiffany and Company who sold them to the U.S. Ordnance Department.

Made for cavalry, this high-quality M1840 saber is undated, features a steel blade with a flat back and measures 35½” long with a width of 1 3/16”.  Saber has a hilt of steel as does the pommel cap, knucklebow and two-branch guard. Clearly marked on the obverse ricasso of the blade is the strong stamping of “TIFFANY & CO / NEW YORK” in block letter format. Blade reverse ricasso bears the mark “P.D.L.” in a serrated oval. The dusky-gray blade with its hatchet-type point is free of any etching and is in very good condition. The blade edge bears evidence of sharpening and has just a few tiny nicks, else very good condition. Exhibits a light sheen with just the normal pinprick rust pitting and age coloration overall.

Original leather washer pad is strong. Original grips are tight and consist of a turned wooden handle wrapped with black bridle leather and encircled with original, twisted, brass wire wrap.  Leather is very dry, shows moderate shrinkage and has worn through in areas. Brass wire still tight.  The imported, undented iron scabbard exhibits a smooth mottled gray patina with light pinprick rusting overall. Has been cleaned at one time.  Unmarked throat retains the two small set screws. Large drag bears no stampings. Iron bands are tight and hold the two sword suspension rings.  A fine, strong specimen of an early M1840 heavy cavalry saber and scabbard at a fine price.
