This side knife is an unusual edged weapon likely made in the field or on the farm. Crudely made, this quite serviceable knife has a 10” long, 1 3/8” wide, single-edged, bolo-like blade that still retains its sharpness. Crude grips measure 4” long and consist of an iron half-guard secured to the blade tang with three rivets. Both blade and guard sandwiched between four, thick, heavy leather rolls. Blade tang visible on the grips. Entire grip area is wrapped with a thin strip of rawhide leather that has shrunk and is tightly bound. Strong blade shows light surface rust and evidence of sharpening. No maker marks or stampings.
Leather sheath is a ‘put together’ that measures 11¾” x 2 wide and consists of a large, single-section of thick brown leather unstitched but wrapped together and bound at the tip with a large brass scabbard tip. Tip has only one small brass brad remaining and is loose. Scabbard throat is edged in a crude band of sheet brass. Upper part of sheath has a narrow belt loop riveted to the body. Also has a brass ring bent over to tighten the leather wrap. Knife fits well into the sheath. A most unusual, crudely assembled, field-made sideknife with sheath from the effects of a Connecticut Civil War soldier.
