This unexcavated iron and wood artifact is a great example of a Civil War Confederate soldier’s sturdy belt knife commonly referred to as a “Bowie” knife. Solid and balanced, this specimen exhibits a pleasing mellow brown patina. Bowie knife features a robust 10½” long blade and measures a total length of 15½”. No scabbard. Likely made from a file, this knife sports a menacing looking, single-edge blade 1 3/8” wide and over 3/16” thick at the ricasso. It weighs over 1 pound and widens toward its 2½” long clipped point. Unmarked, the pleasing dark gray / brown, thick blade gives the appearance of having a crude, unstopped wide fuller over its entire length. With a sharpened 3” long false edge, the blade surface shows light to moderate scattered rust pitting. Tang extends into the grips of cylindrical but tapered, solid pine smooth handle. Pewter ferrule is tight to the tang. The sweeping iron counterguard forms the “D” and terminates into the back end of the handle. Grips are comfortable and very tight. This rugged Confederate Bowie was once part of the renowned collection of Norm Flayderman. A great example of a hand-made belt knife ready to any American military knife collection or display.
