This measures 11” overall and has a 7-1/4” double-edged, spearpoint blade. It is crudely, but sturdily made, certainly the product of a local blacksmith. The blade is somewhat thick with good edge and point, though one edge is just a bit uneven and the blade edges as they taper out near the guard do not do so uniformly. The iron guard is a simple, flat rectangle with rounded ends. The wood grip slabs are equally rudimentary, showing single finger groove on each side near the guard and secured through the blade tang by two large copper rivets with brass washers. The blade is gray metal, showing dark gray spots, but no significant pitting or corrosion and some striations along the edge from old sharpening. The guard shows a shallow forward bend top and bottom. The grips have a good, even light brown color, with some wear from handling and use, but no chips or cracks. The exposed edges of the blade tang show some rust.

Knives like this are impossible to date precisely, but this is of the Civil War period and would be good addition to a Civil War or early frontier display.  [sr] [ph:L]
