An excellent condition hunting Bowie with staghorn grips and clip-point blade. The grips are excellent, with nice cream and brown color and good surface with no cracks, chips or damage, oval guard, and blade bright, with excellent edge and point.
The blade has median ridge and a ricasso marked on one side “E. M. DICKENSON / SHEFFIELD” and “THE INVICTA” in sans-serif letters in a scroll over “ENGLAND,” the latter showing slight rubbing along the top of the letters. The firm was in business by the 1870s and the Invicta trademark was in use by 1893, a rough date for the knife given the presence of “England” as a place of manufacture and the U.S. Tariff Act of 1890.
The scabbard is good, solid, brown leather, with seam on one side and belt loop on the other along with a impressed border and addorsed floral motifs at center. The seam is tight. The scabbard shows some minor rubs along the edges, tip, and belt loop, with some rubs and a spot of finish loss above the impressed floral design on the belt loop side.
A very nice, late 1800s clip-point Bowie. [sl] [ph:L]
