The bolo knife found use in WW1 clearing positions for machine gun crews, etc. This is a good example with scabbard and was made and marked by the American Cutlery Company of Chicago: “A.C. CO./ CHICAGO/ 1918” on the left side near the guard, and “U.S. / MOD. 1917 / C.T” on the right. The blade has a good surface showing mostly gray from remnants of the black finish with some fine scratches from rubbing and cleaning and with  some darker gray spots near the forward edge of the blade. The black finish shows stronger at the at the base of the blade and pommel. The guard shows some scratches and a few very small dings. The wood has good, dark brown color, with one or two small flakes near the pommel and the typical rough finish and fit of these “C.T” or “Commercial Tolerances” knives.

As is correct for this pattern, the knife leaves off the catch release button on the grip near the guard, but retains the small hole in the guard so that it could still be used with the earlier pattern scabbards with catch hooks if necessary. The small US Ordnance bomb with single flame is stamped upside down near the hole. The scabbard with it is khaki canvas with russet leather tip marked “BRAUER BROS” in an arc over “1918” in excellent condition.  [sr][ph:L]
