This rugged artifact is a standard-issue, British-imported naval seaman’s folding pocket knife in use by the U. S. Navy during the late 19^th century and early 20^th century. In very good, complete condition, this sailor’s implement was produced by George Wostenholm of Sheffield, England. The three function, folding knife tool features a 3¼” long, single-edged blade, a short 1½” long double edged blade and a 4” long marlin spike. The long blade is stamped at the reverse ricasso with the maker “GEORGE / WOSTENHOLM / SHEFFIELD / ENGLAND.” Left flat of blade also is clearly stamped with “I * XL.” Two piece grips are of black leather and cut to a checkered diamond pattern. Grips are secured to the knife body with five small iron pins. Marlin spike end is fitted with an iron carry loop. Spike was used for tight rope knots in the rigging, etc. Back spring is strong and tight. A seldom seen naval tool.   [ra] [ph:L]
