These Swiss Model 1918 bayonets were issued with the Schmidt-Rubin carbine patterns of 1911 and with the K31, which was adopted in 1933 and remained in service until 1958. Perhaps the most significant element of the bayonet is the use of a median ridge on the double-edge spearpoint blade rather than a central fuller. The blade is in the bright, as is the guard and pommel of the hilt, which may have been plated. There is some graying along the drag lines on the blade, from sheathing and unsheathing and some small gray spots on the obverse edges of the guard and pommel. The locking mechanism is functional.
The wood grips are light brown in color, unmarred and tight to the metal. The crossguard is crisply stamped “815617” and the blade bears a sharp “Elsener / Schwyz” stamp on the obverse ricasso.
The metal scabbard has its brown leather belt frog in very good condition that bears a maker stamp on the reverse. In this case the scabbard has a leather billet riveted to a side bar that would have been secured by buckle on the frog. This frog, however, is set up with an integral billet to pass around the side bar of the scabbard then be secured back on the frog by a stud.
The scabbard body shows lots of original blue on the front side, but a rubbed area showing some gray metal across the mid-section of the reverse.
The overall look of the bayonet will remind collectors of the influence that Swiss design had earlier on U.S. bayonet design, specifically in designing a bayonet for the Spanish-American War era Krag rifle. [sr]
