Item Code: 172-3646

This is a very handsome dress dagger with its leather scabbard. Overall length of the dagger is approximately 22.25” from point to pommel. The unmarked blade itself is 17” long and was probably crafted from a longer sword blade. The fullers begin ¼” below the hilt and run the whole length. The spine of the blade is flat and unrounded, running 9.5” from the cross-guard to where it tapers down to an unsharpened top edge. The lower, true edge, has no nicks. Blade surface is bright with light scattered mottling. The cross-guard of the dagger is silver. The unadorned quillions extend approximately 1.25”on each side to create a gentle “S”-shaped guard. The ivory grip features a cross-hatched pattern. Wound around the grip is a 1/8-inch-wide strip of copper bordered on either side with double-twists of copper wire. The pommel is made of silver in the shape of an eagle’s head. There is still very fine detail visible to the feathers with only minor wear to the raised elements. A silver button on the eagle’s head marks where the end of the tang was peened.

The dagger comes with a black leather scabbard in similarly nice condition. The leather is in excellent condition with no signs of dryness or flaking. The leather is decorated with a pattern of embossed “X”s within linear rectangles. The leather is wrapped around an inner wooden frame. Where the leather is stitched, the stitching is complete and unbroken. The three pieces of furniture on the scabbard are silver and in good condition. The throat features ornamental engraving on one side only. Both suspension rings are present.

This is a very clean and well-made gentleman’s dagger.   [jet]
