This accouterment is an original Civil War socket bayonet with its leather scabbard. Total length of the bayonet is 21” long while the blade itself is 17½” long. This M1855 socket bayonet was issued to fit the US Percussion Model 1855 Rifle, and also fit the M1861 and M1863 rifled-muskets. Bayonet’s lines are simple and direct as the bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. Blade surfaces exhibit areas of dark oxidation and pitting. Flat of shank is marked with “US” / ‘s’. Leather scabbard is constructed of black bridle leather that shows moderate cracking, crazing and also has one weak area 9” from the point. Body stitching is strong and the frog / belt loop shows much cracking and flexing. Leather has no rips or tears. Brass tip is loose to the scabbard body and is missing one brad. An original Civil War socket bayonet with its leather scabbard in good condition.
