This is an original American Civil War saber bayonet manufactured by the Ames Manufacturing Company of Chicopee, Massachusetts just prior to the Civil War.  Made to fit the infantry length Sharps rifle, records indicate that approximately 2000 of these saber bayonets were produced.

The overall length of this bayonet is 26 ¾” while the slightly curved blade itself is 22” long. Bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. The brass ribbed grip is covered with fine scratches probably caused by someone who once cleaned it with a wire brush. Locking spring is missing but screw is present, and button is frozen in place by rust. No markings are noted on the top flat of the grip or cross guard.

Blade is dark and the surface has fine pitting overall. Ricasso has a worn stamp of “AMES MFG. CO. / CHICKOPEE / MASS” on one side, while the stamp on the other side is worn to the point of illegibility.

Overall this piece shows wear but is still quite presentable.  [cm][ph:L]
