This brass handled saber bayonet measures approximately 26.25” overall with a 21.25” long blade. Fuller is approximately 15” long. The unmarked blade is semi-bright with scattered darker spotting. There are no nicks on the blade. The hilt is cast brass with cross guard, muzzle ring, and ribbed grip. Brass wears a dark patina. The locking spring in the handle works well. The flat surface on top of the grip has a dual width cutout to accept the stud mounted on altered Mississippi rifles. A number (125) is stamped across the flat. The muzzle ring has a large inside diameter of 0.893”.
The leather scabbard is in fine condition with a brass throat, round belt stud, and scabbard tip. The latter missing its four tacks, now has thin copper wire holding it to leather. Scabbard body shows a few old creases but remains strong. A portion of an original leather frog remains attached; likely part of a shoulder harness.
This specific style of the U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi rifle saber bayonet is believed to be from New Hampshire. Up to the start of the Civil War, 5000 Model 1841 rifles were kept in storage by the State of Massachusetts. At that time, Massachusetts sold 1000 of these rifles to the State of New Hampshire. New Hampshire had these rifles uniquely altered to accept a sword bayonet. Most of these NH altered rifles were issued to the 9th NH Volunteer Infantry. [jet][ph:L]
