This is a rarely seen German made sword bayonet for the 1841 Mississippi rifle, and many were marketed by Horstmann & Sons of Philadelphia. These were typically marked by that firm on the ricasso with the company name. These were sold prior to the Civil War commercially to a host of military organizations desiring a sword and bayonet in one. The example offered here is not marked by Horstmann & Sons and it was therefore possibly imported direct from the maker or a contactor in Germany by a State or State military organization? The ricasso is stamped with a king’s head, the maker's mark of Gebruder Weyersberg, Solingen. These are sought after by Confederate collectors because Alabama Confederate soldiers were photographed early in the war with these formidably weapons attached to their Mississippi rifles. The artist Don Troiani has done a wonderful illustration of such an Alabamian on page 28 of his book Don Troiani's Regiments & Uniforms of the Civil War.
The blade is 21” long with full length stopped fullers. Full length bottom edge with no nicks and 5” false edge on top. The blade is dark brown with light surface oxidation overall. There is a brass “washer” between the blade and cross guard with remnants of the original felt washer there also. The cross guard is cast brass with bulbous ends. Measures 4” across and has a number “9” stamped in the center. The handle and extended socket are one piece cast brass and also stamped with a “9”. Grip portion is 4” long. Extending from the handle, and offset, is the socket. Socket is designed to fit on the Mississippi rifle with its blade front. Nice deep patina on all brass. A scarce bayonet in very good condition.
