Brass hilted saber bayonets made by Boyle and Gamble in Richmond are quickly recognizable by their flat-sided bird’s head pommels. This one is untouched, with mostly an even, aged patina to the brass hilt and retains its locking spring and button. The hilt shows some handling dings, most noticeable on the center reverse of the grip, with a few scratches and smaller dings elsewhere and some darker age spots, but none are particularly egregious. The quillon disks are present on the end of curved guard and atop the muzzle ring, the latter in a typically flatter, more elongated shape. The spring, spring button and screw are present, showing surface corrosion, brown with some reddish orange in color. The peened blade tang on the pommel shows brown as well, but is smoother metal. The face of the guard shows some whitish green that would likely clean and shows a very slight gap next to the upper half of the blade tang on the reverse, but is stable. The blade is full-length with good edge and point. The metal shows as a deep bluish gray mixed with brown and some lighter gray. The surface shows light corrosion overall with a couple of broader, deeper spots near the edge, about where the fuller tapers out on the reverse, that more appear to be forging flaws.
This is a very good example of a classic Confederate saber bayonet by a prolific and very well-known Confederate arms maker and was formerly in the collections of the Texas Civil War Museum. [sr][ph:L]
