For details on these bayonets see Marcot and also Reilly. These are identical in form to the standard US M1855 socket bayonet, but differ in dimensions and are not interchangeable with those bayonets or with the Sharps rifle socket bayonet. This is a good example and like most is unmarked. Reilly notes some with a small letter stamped on the socket just forward of the mortise. All, however, seem to have been produced in-house by Spencer.
This is full length, complete with functional locking ring, and has good edges and point. The metal is generally smooth, with just some light salt-and-peppering here and there, but was thinly plated at some point, likely to keep it bright and obviate the need for polishing, and the plating has worn or flaked off in places, giving it an uneven appearance of a muted silver-gray over a slightly darker natural, aged steel patina of gray mixed with thin brown, with the socket naturally showing more loss of the plating from handling.
These bayonets were issued with the Army rifles starting with the December 1861 contract for 10,000 rifles. The earlier Navy Spencers, numbering 703, were supplied with saber bayonets. A subsequent order for an additional 300, of which 200 were the Army pattern. It has been suggested a tinned socket bayonet may have been for one of those rifles since tinned finishes were not uncommon on navy weapons, but it seems those additional 300 rifles were simply delivered with no bayonets, or at least none for the Army pattern rifles, so we cannot say when the finish was applied to this one.
Overall length of the bayonet is 21”; length of the blade is 19 ¼”; length of the socket is 3”.
This would be a key addition to a Spencer army rifle. [sr][ph:L]
