REGULATION UNION ARMY CIVIL WAR BAYONET AND SCABBARD

Item Code: 286-1363

A very good, near excellent condition regulation bayonet with scabbard for the Model 1855 .58 Cal. Rifle Musket, and later patterns like the M1861, M1863 etc. The bayonet is in the bright, with smooth metal, both blade and socket, and is complete with the locking ring. The edges and point are good. The markings at the base of the blade “U.S.” and “1” (likely a subinspector’s number) are fully legible, though a bit rubbed from polishing over the years. The scabbard is likewise near excellent with a firm body showing no bends, breaks or repairs and has the brass tip in place, showing a muted, aged brass patina and no dings or dents. The black finish of the body is very good, but does show some narrow age cracks and spots of scuffing on some edges. The latter could be disguised, but we have left it as is and the leather has not been polished or treated with any dressing or preservative. The belt frog is buff leather, black and now oxidized to a brown, something that happened very quickly at the time from iron mordants used in the dyes. It is the 8-rivet pattern, using 4 rivets to form and hold the loop of the belt loop, 3 to secure its ends in the collar that wraps around the scabbard throat, and 1 at the upper side of the throat to reinforce the stitching attaching the collar to the scabbard throat. The copper rivets have a nice, undisturbed patina. The buff leather has a nice surface and color showing just a couple of lighter spots and a little rubbing to the edges from wear on a waist belt.

This is a superior example of the regulation Civil War bayonet for the .58 Caliber rifle musket- the standard infantry longarm used throughout the war.    [sr][ph:L]
