A very good condition and nicely marked socket bayonet and scabbard for the British P1853 rifle musket. The bayonet has smooth metal overall and preserves a lot of thin blue on the socket with the blade rubbed medium bright, but showing good edge and point, the locking ring present, and scabbard in very good condition and nicely marked as well. The socket is stamped on edge “23” which is mirrored in larger rack numbers stamped on the top of the socket: “23/155/66.” The base of the blade shows an inspection mark “B” over “67” and a maker’s name just underneath that we cannot make out.
The scabbard has good, smooth black surface to the leather. Both throat and tip are in place, the latter showing some dents and dings from use, but with the frog hook in place on the upper mount and a visible War Department stamp showing a broad arrow over “WD” just below the tip of the frog hook.
