This Plymouth “Navy” Rifle bayonet has a partially bright blade with a light patina and minor localized pitting typical for the age and intended environments of use for such a piece. The 22.75” blade is marked “COLLINS & CO. HARTFORD, CONN.” by the manufacturer who produced approximately 10,000 Plymouth Rifles with matching numbered bayonets between 1862 and 1864.
The brass hilt and handguard are in good condition with very little tarnishing and minor wear typical of affixing to its accompanying rifle’s bayonet stud. The handguard features a stamped anchor, while the hilt bears the stamped numbers 5509, denoting the serial number of the intended matching rifle. The butt of the hilt is stamped “F.C.W.” for inspector Frank C. Warner.
The leather scabbard is in good condition with some typical but minor finish cracking along its length. The stitched seam on the reverse side of the scabbard is intact and tight with a 1.5” separation near the brass throat attachment. There are no crease marks and the scabbard integrity is strong and full functional. The mounted brass throat and finial are strongly affixed by 8 rivets while the frog attachment is very solid and in excellent condition. Some minor oxidation is present on the brass with little to no observable tarnishing.
The Navy Ordinance Department commissioned the construction of a new vessel to be used for the testing of naval ordinance under all types of sea conditions. The new vessel was named “Plymouth” and a new .69 caliber navy rifle produced by Eli Whitney was selected for testing and performed satisfactorily – extending the name Plymouth to the model of rifle.
A rare chance to own a numbered Plymouth bayonet that would fit very nicely into any Civil War collection or complete an original Whitney/Plymouth rifle and bayonet pairing.
