REMINGTON ALTERATION MISSISSIPPI RIFLE BAYONET WITH SCABBARD

Item Code: 490-7074

Overall length of the bayonet is 24.50 inches. The blade itself is 19.50 inches long with a central fuller that meas. approx. 15.25 inches. The true edge is free of nicks while the blade surface is mostly bright in appearance with a nice light patina typical for the piece’s age. One side of the ricasso is stamped “1861” while the other reads “COLLINS & CO HARTFORD CONN” in three lines.

The cast brass hilt is 4.75 inches long with a ribbed surface, muzzle ring and quillon. Locking mechanism works properly and the flat spring retains some of its original finish from the factory. Brass has a light patina with “14” stamped on the top flat face of the hilt. The butt of the hilt shows some small dings and dents from use.

The scabbard retains its brass throat and tip fittings, along with original rivets and brass frog attachment.  The leather is strong with some cracking on the outer finished layer while the sewn seam on the reverse side has separated.  Still, the scabbard remains perfectly functional for its age and presumed pattern of use and would still readily mount to a rifleman’s belt with the proper frog attachment.

A wonderful example of a wartime Remington alteration bayonet with original scabbard that would make an exceptional addition to any Civil War collection.   [cm][ph:L]
