This is a good example the sword/saber bayonet for the Remington Model 1862 US Contract Rifle, also known among collectors as the Model 1863 Contract Rifle, but best known as the “Remington Zouave.” The brass hilt has an untouched, aged brass patina with a slightly dark orange tone with some darker age spots and some light dings, including some shallow dots of the grip flat, but the locking spring, screw, and button show some blue and the BH inspector stamp near the muzzle ring is fully legible. The blade is unmarked, as is correct, has a good edge and point, showing mostly muted-silver-gray with some darker gray age stains. The brass scabbard mounts match the hilt in color. The black leather scabbard body is good, with the finish showing thin age cracks and thin scratches, but no large areas of rubbing, little flaking, with the color oxidizing just slightly toward brown. This comes with its bayonet frog, made of bridle leather with a wide belt loop and slotted open pocket for the scabbard throat with stud, with the belt loop formed using three copper rivets and the pocket two rivets on either side.
The Remington produced the rifle from 1863 to 1864, delivering 10,001 to the government (the odd number includes one sample gun.) The rifle blends elements of the M1841 and M1855 rifles and acquired its nickname among collectors from its beautiful and somewhat fancy appearance, like period zouave uniforms, but their period use is undocumented. This would look good with a rifle, of course, but is also a basic piece in a collection of Civil War bayonets and edged weapons. [sr][ph:L]
