This accoutrement is an original, angular Model 1866 Cadet musket socket bayonet. The M1866 Cadet bayonet was authorized in 1851 to fit the M1851 Cadet Musket. 300 of these units were delivered to the Virginia Military Institute in July 1852 and an additional 4,400 were made during 1852 and 1853, all produced at the Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. This bayonet is the only American-made type accoutrement that utilized socket shoulders on both sides of the locking ring. Ring is unique in that it has a centrally cut lateral mortise that encompasses the stop pin. Both the locking ring and the socket are stamped with numerals “36”. Socket also stamped with “208” near the bridge. Specimen is 17 1/8” long overall with a 14 15/32” long blade. Has a 2 21/32” long socket and a clear “US” government stamping on the face and a full face flute 13 ½” long. Has a pleasing shiny finish with few scattered areas of light peppery pitting overall. No edge nicks. Bayonet in fine condition.
