This is a standard Model 1855 socket bayonet with accompanying scabbard. The bayonet blade measures 18” and has ‘US’ with a center punch mark stamped on the flat shank. There is a clear marked letter ‘J’ under the US. Letter’s denoted under the U.S could indicate an inspector’s mark or production line symbol. For example, ‘S’ is a common punch and could reflect the manufacturer mark of Springfield. The ‘J’ indicated on this blade is most likely an inspector’s mark. The socket measures 3” and the ring is frozen.
Scabbard is worn with leather body that shows several marks of crazing. Backside seam stitching is tight and unbroken. Scabbard retains 6 of the 8 original rivets. “A.D Laidley,” a U.S Department sub inspector, is stamped on the leather frog. The frog is looped and shows signs of being used on a belt. The brass scabbard tip is missing. [mk] [ph:L]
