The bayonet in its entirety has scattered patches of dark discoloration over a dulled and muted pewter coloring. The tip of the blade has some pinpricking. ‘U.S’ is stamped on the face flat. The socket, from age, has developed a pewter color and there are signs of oxidation on the inside. The blade measures 18” and the socket is 2 ¾”. Locking ring works, and moves tight. It retains the original screw in good condition. Typical of this model bayonet is a ‘zig zag’ mortise, which is also present on this item.
Good addition for any collector looking for earlier accoutrement pieces. [mk] [ph:L]
