Sixth-plate tintype of a young bearded Union soldier wearing a dark Pattern 1858 dress hat, also known as the “Hardee hat,” turned up on one side with an infantry hunting horn insignia on the front, dark frockcoat and light trousers. The soldier also wears his cartridge box and sling with plate and his waist belt with cap box and oval Pattern 1839 “US” belt plate. Across his chest in front of him he holds an Enfield musket complete with sling. All brass has been lightly touched by the photographer with gilt paint.
Contrast and clarity are excellent. Plate is clean throughout. Just above the subject’s head is a dark vertical line that under magnification appears to be a gap in the photographer’s backdrop and not a blemish on the image.
Photo has the usual decorative brass mat and frame in good condition. All is housed in a union case with a heavily raised scrollwork exterior decoration in excellent condition. [sr] [ph:L]
